Orihuela is really two places. Inland stands the old city: a cathedral, baroque palaces, palm groves, a bishop's seat since the fifteenth century. On the coast — Orihuela Costa — sixteen kilometres of coves and sandy beaches, golf greens and low-rise resort living.
The coast is where most buyers look, and it is unashamedly international: you hear English, Norwegian and Swedish in the supermarket queue. La Zenia Boulevard, the largest open-air shopping centre in the province, sits in the middle of it, open all year.
Here you will feel at home if you want the beach and the golf course in the same week, with shops and restaurants open through the winter.
